Department of Public Works

What Does the Village Department of Public Works (DPW) Do?

The Village Department of Public Works (DPW) is the backbone of village operations, providing essential services that keep our community clean, safe, and functioning every day. Whether it's plowing snow, maintaining roads, or ensuring your garbage is picked up, the DPW is always working—often behind the scenes—to support the quality of life we all enjoy.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Road and Street Maintenance:

DPW crews maintain and repair village streets, sidewalks, curbs, and signage. This includes patching potholes, sweeping streets, painting crosswalks, and ensuring safe travel for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

2. Snow Removal and Winter Services:

When winter weather hits, the DPW is on the front lines plowing roads, salting streets, and clearing municipal sidewalks and parking lots to ensure the village remains accessible and safe.

3. Parks and Public Spaces:

The DPW maintains village parks, playgrounds, green spaces, and public buildings. This includes landscaping, repairs, and ensuring these areas are safe, clean, and welcoming for residents and visitors.

4. Stormwater and Drainage:

The department monitors and maintains storm drains and catch basins to reduce flooding and manage runoff, helping protect infrastructure and the environment.

5. Infrastructure Support for Events and Emergencies:

The DPW provides logistical support for village events and responds during emergencies like storms or flooding, ensuring public safety and restoring services quickly.

6. Sanitation and Recycling:

Sanitation and recycling is managed by the Town of Oyster Bay

The Village Department of Public Works is committed to providing dependable, high-quality services that support everyday life. From early morning garbage runs to late-night snow removal, DPW crews work year-round to serve and protect our village.

If you see our team out on the job, give them a wave—they’re proud to keep our community moving forward.
